If it seems like your dry or chapped lips can’t get any relief from store-bought chapsticks; it’s time to make your own lip balm at home! While practicing social distancing and staying home, now more than ever we have the ability to create effective, useful products at home in large quantities and for a bigger bang for your buck! Using household products like coconut oil, shea butter, and beezwax we can create sustainable, natural, and super hydrating lip balms at home! These DIY chapsticks are not only great for providing relief to your chapped lips, but they are also all natural and great for the skin.

You will need:

  • small containters or chapstick tubes for the balm
  • a small pot for double boiler
  • a small glass or stainless steel bowl to place on top of pot
  • coconut oil (unrefined, virgin, and organic)
  • shea butter
  • beeswax
  • beetroot powder (optional)

First you will need to get a small amount of water boiling in your pot and then place your glass bowl ontop and add your ingredients in the bowl. Add 3 tablespoons of shea butter, to 3 tablespoons of coconut oil and mix well. If you want to add a tint you can add a few sprinkles of beetroot powder to make it a pink tint to tint your lips when applying the balm. Then pour into a measuring cup and then into your small lip balm containers.

Second lip balm combo you can do is add 3 tablespoons of coconut oil to 1 tablespoon of grated beezwax. Again, if you want your lip balm to have a tint, you can add a sprinkle of beetroot poweder. Mix together until well combined, then pour into your lip balm containers.

Wash your hands well with soap and water before applying the lip balms!

All these ingredients will be very hydrating to the lips. The shea butter is high in fatty acids and other antinflammatory factors which soothe and replenish dry skin. Coconut oil is very hydrating and softens the skin by absorbing through many layers of the skin and leaving you feeling soft an supple. Beeswax is also very helpful for dry and chapped lips, it restores moisture, while also protecting from harsh UV light from and contains antibacterial properties. Beeswax contains emulsifiers which help to keep the moisture in the lips. This is why its helpful to add beeswax to your lip balm, your lips would feel more dry faster if you didn’t add it.
