Life has many unexpected twists and turns. Yet some people, through thick or thin, seem to have unshakable character and optimism. One way to describe them is “confident,” but Dr. Deepak Dugar believes the better term is “grounded.”

What exactly does being a grounded person mean—and how can you be one?

The meaning of being well-grounded

When people describe someone as being grounded, they refer to a physical and mental state of being confident and sure of oneself. Being grounded means you have a strong connection with who you are, which brings you physical and emotional balance.

That’s why nothing fazes such individuals—their strong sense of self is their anchor when life hits rough waters. When you stay grounded, you are always able to see the bigger picture no matter the chaos that surrounds you.

7 Ways to become a grounded person

Dr. Dugar makes one point clear, however: being a grounded person is an intentional act. As such, he offers the following tips to help you become and stay grounded.

  1. Connect with nature: A simple but excellent way to stay grounded is to spend a few minutes outdoors each day. Take your shoes off and stand or sit barefoot in the grass, for example. Clear your mind from your daily worries or distractions, and let nature help you reflect on what truly matters.

  2. Exercise: A grounded person puts their energy to good use by working out, which serves as an excellent reset button for their day. You can do weightlifting, boxing, running, or anything that gets your heart pumping. Not only does exercising prompt your body to release endorphins, completing sets or beating personal records can also boost your confidence.

  3. Address your issues: Many people are afraid to face the deepest emotions they keep locked away in a box. However, holding onto emotional baggage can only cause stress and negativity in your body, and makes you very unbalanced and distracted. It certainly helps to speak with a holistic healer or therapist to sort out your feelings and begin the process of healing. After all, being at peace with yourself is central to the meaning of being well-grounded.

  4. Find something you love: When you pour energy into something that brings you unfiltered joy, that activity can only bring you fulfillment and confidence. This is why a grounded person finds outlets that help them express their happiness. Whether it’s cooking, painting, working out, or gardening, it’s important to find something that makes your spirit sing.

  5. Always come back to your breath: A well-grounded life’s meaning can only be found by living in the present moment. Given the barrage of distractions that bombard us every day, though, this is easier said than done. One simple practice you can try is mindful breathing. There are many breathing patterns out there, but this one is beginner-friendly: breathe in through your nose for three seconds, hold your breath for two seconds, and breathe out through your mouth for four seconds.

  6. Be Still: The blistering pace of life can make you feel unmoored, pushed and pulled in every which way. If you want to be a grounded person, you have to be comfortable with being still right where you are. Practicing stillness grants you renewed calm and clarity, which helps you realize what’s truly important—and what’s merely a distraction.

  7. Pamper yourself: Well-grounded individuals genuinely love themselves and prioritize self-care. And you don’t have to splurge to give your weary soul a little TLC. Simply draw a warm bath once a week and add some Epsom or Himalayan salt into the water. Try to relax and fill your mind with positive energy. This can help you get rid of negative energy and reset your focus for the days ahead.

Why is being a grounded person important?

When you are grounded, you can process events more clearly and identify what’s truly crucial. No matter what life throws at you, you’ll never lose your composure and you’ll always keep moving forward. Most importantly, being grounded gives you a deeper sense of who you really are, which is perhaps the greatest goal one can achieve in life.

Being grounded: it’s more than just a character trait

Of course, being grounded benefits other facets of your life as well. Dr. Dugar, for instance, always makes sure that he is grounded and present in the moment during surgery. He is genuinely passionate about the art and science of performing scarless rhinoplasty, and a well-grounded mindset is one of the reasons why he has become a leading name in this surgical technique.
